Review: Nécessaire The Deodorant - Fragrance Free

After testing multiple organic, natural, drugstore WHATEVER deodorants, I’ve found the one to truly combat odour with added skin-loving benefits — and I couldn’t be happier. Yeah, it’s Nécessaire’s The Deodorant in Fragrance Free.

Never in my life did I think I’d want to justify spending $28.00 CAD on a deodorant, but here I am, a smile and happy underarms with no odour and sweat later. Now, with that being said…

Growing up, drugstore deodorants worked perfectly fine for me. I don’t have an issue with sweat, but my goal with a good deodorant was always and still is to combat odour, which — by the way — is so normal. Before immersing myself in this vast, innovative world of beauty and skincare, I never would've fathomed spending more than $10.00 CAD on a shampoo and conditioner, $6.00 CAD on a deodorant, simply because that’s what I had in my shower (which worked perfectly fine), but also, I wasn’t exposed to higher end, luxury brands with different formulations than I am now over the last four years, (which is also perfectly fine). For some reason, I still feel puzzled with how I got myself to spend essentially $30.00 CAD on a deodorant even though I love it so much. I guess because it’s just deodorant? I could justify spending double that on a candle, but… it’s fine. Although I feel puzzled, this purchase has prompted a lot of introspection which has me thinking about the way I spend my money and how I view product in 2020. Maybe I’ll write a post on this at a later time. Remember that everyone is entitled to spend their money as they please and quite frankly no one should ever have to explain themselves. I’m just reflecting out loud here.

“Des, why look for a new deodorant if the drugstore ones worked fine?” Well, for one, the esthetician in me craves to discover innovative formulas while the other part of me is always looking for products that go beyond one claim, especially in a deodorant. (Hi, exfoliation and brightening properties!) Also, I know what else you’re thinking. “Are you looking for a natural deodorant because you want aluminum free, organic, bla bla bla?” Eh, not much has been proven and studied with deodorant. I just want something that works and has added benefits beyond just combatting odour, which is why I really love this one.

Onto the review and despite my at sea thoughts, Necessaire’s The Deodorant in Fragrance Free is truly my favourite deodorant ever. From the formula to application to results, I’m pleased to say that after only one use, I knew it was going to be the one for me.

My experience:

A million times yes. A deodorant to combat odour and help exfoliate all at once? Baby…

I’m so incredibly impressed with this find. After testing out so many natural deodorants that haven’t helped with combatting odour but in fact have added to it (in a negative way), I truly do feel that Nécessaire’s is a powerful shield to protect and treat the underarm area in more ways than one. With Lactic and Mandelic Acid part of the formula, I’ve noticed smoother and brighter underarms after a few weeks using this. Keep in mind, I’m currently doing laser hair removal on my underarms so of course there are many different factors that have helped with brightening and texture, but the deodorant has definitely made an impact. (My laser sessions are currently ever six weeks which is how I’ve been able to notice a difference). The main reason I wanted to try this is because I just wanted something to help with odour beyond blocking it for less than a few hours. This one lasts the whole day. And as an esthetician, I’m always moving around and I haven’t felt the need to reapply. I don’t sweat much either, so that’s a plus.

I’d say to be careful applying it after shaving or exfoliating your underarm area because it does have exfoliating properties already in the formula. I’ve done it a couple of times after shaving and my underarms tingled a bit, which was to be expected, but I’d wait a few minutes before applying the deodorant at that point.

Does a little go a long way? Ish? I think so. I usually don’t massage the product right away on application, but dab a bit on each underarm and then massage it in circular motions to maximize the product usage.

Packaging + user experience

I absolutely love it! I feel like I read someone say it got a bit messy with the cream / twist component combo, but as long as you twist the packaging the other way (as if you’d be twisting a lipstick back into its component) and wipe any residue with a napkin afterwards, everything stays super clean.

Price: $20.00 USD / $28.00 CAD for 50ml / 1.7 fl oz

Do I think it’s worth $28.00 CAD? Look. I say yes only because it has added benefits beyond helping combat odour, but I still don’t understand the concept of spending $28.00 CAD on a deodorant, for me, at least. But like, it’s in my cart.

Please keep in mind that I’m in Canada which means I review my products with a Canadian price tag / conversion in mind.

Would I repurchase? Yes, I would. I want to try the fragrance range next!

Texture and scent: The Body Wash is a delight. Each wash has a gel-oil hybrid texture and a different scent depending on the one you’re using. The eucalyptus is so invigorating, the sandalwood is so sensual and the fragrance free smells like sweet nothing.

How to use: Squeeze out the wash and lather it all over your body. Massage it for a rich, bubbly foam and rinse well.

My experience: The best body washes I’ve ever tried.

I truly haven’t tried anything like them. The moments I lather myself in Nécessaire are experiences. Invigorating in every sense of the word. I have a love for each wash, but a soft spot for eucalyptus. It’s healing to me. I love how much they lather and how softening they feel on the skin. A little goes a long way! I never thought I’d be investing in a body wash, but these are worth every cent. From the ingredients, packaging to the end result, it’s all love.

Texture and scent: The Body Lotion is fragrance free. The texture is a thin-thick, soft cream that feels lightweight yet nourishing when massaging it into the skin. (It doesn’t feel sticky which is so important to me!)

How to use: Squeeze out the lotion and massage it into the skin until absorbed.

My experience: A staple.

I actually didn’t like this lotion at first. I thought it just layed on top of my skin without absorbing in, but the more I used it and massaged it into the skin, the more I fell in love with it. It has so many wonderful skin-soothing properties and feels so smoothing after shaving. I love that it’s fragrance free which doesn’t lead to irritation. I’d definitely recommend this lotion if you’re looking for a nourishing body cream.

Texture and scent: The Sex Gel doesn’t smell like anything. The texture feels like a watery gel.

How to use: Remove cap to pump and dispense the product. Apply on areas as desired.

My experience: Stunning.

Firstly, I love how discreet the bottle is. Beautiful and sleek, The Sex Gel sits nicely on my vanity without question. In regards to the actual lube, it’s awesome. I don’t usually need lube, but I obviously wanted to try this one for the solemn fact that it’s clean and packed with goodness. I absolutely love it — it feels so cooling on application and allows for a really sensational glide.

I’d recommend this lube because it’s clean. Nécessaire is transparent with their ingredients and formulations, unlike other brands that formulate lubes with a bunch of chemicals. The Sex Gel feels great. Point blank.

Overall thoughts: Necessary. And inevitably, my favourite body care brand.

Showers after showers, washes, slathers and in times of play, it’s Nécessaire, and always will be. Yes to the washes, to the lotion and lube. I’m here for it all — from the products, ingredients all the way to their mission and inclusivity.
