Review: Youth To The People Polypeptide-121 Future Cream

Nowness is ever so present — there’s no need to catch speed.

Polypeptide-121 Future Cream is Youth To The People’s latest moisturizer packed with nourishing ingredients to intensely seal in moisture and protect the skin barrier. Formulated as fragrance-free with Polypeptide-121, plant proteins, and ceramides, the cream aids in elasticity loss, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as visibly firm the skin. Now, truth be told — If you know me, you know how my skin barrier doesn’t mesh well with ceramides… BUT! The last few months, I truly believe my skin has become slowly accustomed to them so I’m incredibly glad to say that I absolutely ADORE the Future Cream. I can say it’s the best primer for makeup I’ve ever used but also, one of the best moisturizers I’ve tried in the last couple of years, leaving me with the most pillow-soft, dewy finish ever. Having been testing it for over a month, let’s break down this delicious formula and innovativeness together.

My experience + thoughts

The Future Cream has truly been a staple in my skincare wardrobe over the last month. As someone with a dry skin type and dehydrated skin condition, my moisture barrier stays plump, bouncy and even upon application and lasts throughout the day. It layers beautifully with my other serums and feels like a pillow-soft, bouncy dream.

All in all, it’s ideal for anytime of year, morning or night and works INCREDIBLY well as a primer for makeup. Though I don’t wear much, it’s allowed for the most beautiful finish when I wear makeup (or not) and keeps my barrier protected from environmental stressors throughout the day. I love pairing it with the Oasis Serum to pack in the hydration and amplify moisture levels!

Review: Youth To The People Retinal + Niacinamide Youth Serum

I believe that youth is music, forever lasting, forever young. 🎵

Youth To The People Retinal + Niacinamide Youth Serum selfie

With the closest dose you can get without a prescription, welcome Youth To The People’s latest launch, Retinal + Niacinamide Youth Serum. With a stabilized 0.15% retinaldehyde, the serum is amplified with retinol embraced ingredients of Niacinamide, adaptogens and ceramides. Timely enough, when their team sent over the product to test long before the launch date, I had been meaning to incorporate a retinal in my routine for a couple of months before that. Though excited but nervous to test it because ceramides usually don’t work with my skin (surprisingly), the Youth Serum is officially one of my favourite Youth To The People products coming at a shock with how phenomenally the formula worked for me. (Wait until you see the overnight results photos below…) After testing the serum for almost two months, I’m thrilled to be breaking down everything for you today, from formula to usage to understanding how retinal works. As one of the most unique products I’ve seen in the retinoid world, prepare to be enamoured with its formula and innovativeness.

Retinal + Niacinamide Youth Serum

Before we dive in, what IS retinol/retinal?

Retinol (Vitamin A) is a powerhouse known to aid in collagen production, help reduce the look of wrinkles, minimize the appearance of large pores, boost radiance and essentially, everything you’d want in a serum to help promote a healthy, bouncy skin barrier. Often times, many fear using a retinol because they’re scared of a “purge” phase, though it is totally normal. (That’s skin cell turnover, baby!)

Inevitably, retinol can cause mild irritation to the skin barrier regardless if used carefully, depending on how much % each person and their skin barrier can handle. With patience, safe usage, reading instructions and ensuring ample amounts of sun protection with SPF, your retinol journey is really going to be unique to you but worth it when done correctly. Just like any skincare product, a lot of it is trial, error and patience.

Now, retinal is essentially the same thing, but it moves quicker.

Retinol - Slower, over time

Retinal - Quicker

Retinoic Acid - rX Tretinoin

The choice is really up to you as you know your skin barrier best.

My skin type: Balanced/dry.

Ideal for: Retinal can work on most skin types, though topical applications with folks that have sensitized skin barriers, eczema or rosacea won’t necessarily be the best candidates. Retinal is a journey in itself, so proper research and talking to licensed professions is highly recommended if you’re debating starting. (S/O to the esthis and derms!)

Youth To The People Retinal + Niacinamide Youth Serum

Product details:

Retinal + Niacinamide Youth Serum is the closest % of retinal you can get without a prescription. It’s a barrier-strengthening serum amplified with soothing ingredients to help repair UV damaged skin, aid in elasticity loss, diminish and prevent the look of wrinkles and fine lines and promote a healthy, plump and smooth barrier. (Spoiler for my review, but they should’ve call this the “texture remover serum” because my cheek texture is practically gone. Like, a ghost… gone.)

Instantly + overnight — Immediately smooths, softens and leaves a glow.

Product claims with continued use:

  • Decreased fine lines + wrinkles

  • Smoother texture

  • Improved look of dark spots + age spots

  • Minimized appearance of enlarged pores

  • Improved radiance

  • Prevents formation of future signs of aging.

Dessey tip: For people that have a similar skin type as mine with rosy, textured cheeks, I love using their Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream over top. Both the Retinal Youth Serum and Adaptogen Cream share an ingredient called Ashwaganda, which helps in blocking off environmental stressors that can sensitize the skin barrier.

Texture and scent:

Texture — Lightweight

Scent — Fragrance-free.

How to use:

Especially if it’s your first time using a retinal product, following instructions and moving with patience is the way to go. There are a few basic rules to using retinal, so I’ll list them in point form and follow up with a detailed list suggested by YTTP.

Nonnegotiable:

  • PM use only

  • Use on clean, dry skin

  • Never use a retinol/retinal the same day you’ve exfoliated

  • Always wear sunscreen

Retinal Youth Serum directions from YTTP:

  1. Use at night. Do not use on the same day you’ve used an exfoliant.

  2. After cleansing, apply onto clean dry skin avoiding eye area. Follow with your current daily moisturizer or face oil.

  3. Start slowly. 2 times per week the first week. Assess skin each morning.

  4. Increase frequency to 3 times per week during weeks 2-3, working up to 4 times per week in weeks 4-6 as tolerated. If you see any signs of irritation, please dial back usage.

Key ingredients:

— Retinaldehyde: With a stable dose of 0.15% stabilized retinaldehyde, the results will deliver more efficacy than retinol. As mentioned above, retinaldehyde is a powerhouse to help collagen production, help reduce the look of wrinkles, minimize the appearance of large pores, boost radiance and essentially, everything you’d want in a serum to help promote a healthy, bouncy skin barrier.

— 5% Niacinamide: As one of the most popular ingredients in skincare, Niacinamide is also a powerhouse ingredient to help with smoothing texture, calms the moisture barrier and fits beautifully into this formula to help soothe the skin while the retinal performs. 5% is an gorgeous percentage to promote a balanced, even and glow skin tone.

Adaptogenic Mushroom Complex (shitake, maitake, reishi): Soothes irritation, helps calm down inflammation and reduces redness.

— Ashwaganda: Blocks off environmental stressors that can sensitize the skin barrier.

— Triple Ceramide Complex: With 3 Essential ceramides, the complex blend locks in moisture and fortifies the skin barrier.

— Hyaluronic Acid, Squalane + Vitamin E: Juicy, plumping, replenishing ingredients to help with moisture, softening and hydration to the skin.

My experience + thoughts

I’m going to let my FIRST time usage overnight results speak for the first portion of my thoughts…

Youth To The People Retinal + Niacinamide Youth Serum overnight before and after results of a one time usage

I said it in my Oasis Serum review and I’ll say it here again, but over the last few months my skin barrier has been completely compromised due to environmental stressors, harsh weather changes and day to day stress. So, naturally I’ve been thinking of ways to maintain optimal skin health with barrier protection. The last few months I’d been wanting to incorporate a retinol into my routine, but steadily. I had randomly tried one or two in the past, but never stayed consistent for no other reason that I was nervous and impatient. This time around, I was ready to commit with the Youth Serum, but I’ll be honest… I was really scared. Not scared because of the retinal, but because of the ceramides. If you’ve been following along my page and my skin journey, you know 99% of products I’ve tried that are ceramide focused cause me to breakout intensely. For what reason? I couldn’t tell ya. So, yeah, naturally seeing ceramides on the bottle for this product made me hesitant but after looking at the formula, I told myself that the blend of them alongside the adaptogens would hopefully counteract any of the potential irritation of the retinal, and so I was correct.

The Retinal + Niacinamide Youth Serum is by far one of my favourite Youth To The People products to date. Yet again, I’m left speechless at their innovative formulas and concepts with their products. As you can tell from my results, the product worked for me instantly. In the trial period that I’ve been testing the product, I’ve shockingly not gone through ONE purging phase. My skin barrier is genuinely the smoothest it’s been in a very long time, my redness has decreased significantly and so much of the texture on my cheeks is vanished. (That niacinamide is working overtime!) But truly, I’m at a loss for words how effective this retinal is in the short amount of time I’ve used it. Their chemists absolutely nailed this formula and I’m sooooooo curious to see everyone’s retinal journey who tries this. I think what I love most about my experience with the Youth Serum is how gentle it’s been on me. The blend of the ingredients compliment each other seamlessly and it comes to no shock that I haven’t experienced any irritation, sensitized skin or harsh reactions to the retinal.

We do need to talk about the colour of the serum for one second… It’s my *only* thing I need to mention with the formula, but a minor one at that. As you’ve seen in my photos, the serum dispenses a gorgeous, bright yellow, almost golden liquid. It doesn’t stain my pillows, but it definitely leaves a tint on my skin, not drastically, but it does. I suppose the bright side of it is that it’s a product instructed to be used in the evening and you won’t be going out with it, but it’s still something significant to mention, though it disappears quickly. It can be spread easily and blends in decently with your moisturizer of choice, thankfully. Of course, with washing my face in the morning there won’t be a tint. Though, fear not because the gorgeous yellow is naturally found in retinal!

I have to add, I’m SO happy they decided to go with retinaldehyde as their first introduction to retinoids. A lot of vegan and clean brands tend to gear towards plant based “alternatives,” namely “bakuchiol.” Though there’s nothing wrong with itl, I’d prefer a real retinoid. What I love and admire most about Youth To The People is their mission to educate consumers about their product formulas that blend superfoods and science with no fear mongering and real results through both real studies and people.

Review: Lost Cherry Eau De Parfum by Tom Ford

Crowned by me as one of the sexiest fragrances of all time is Lost Cherry by Tom Ford.

Lost Cherry Eau De Parfum by Tom Ford

I'll paint the picture for you before we go any further... A dark room, cherry kisses melting over your collarbones with tempting and provoking emotions of lust, heat and short-winded thoughts. The yearning for more, the arousing eagerness to devour and melt into a pool of an inquiring mind to all things sweet and gourmand that make up a person's secrecy...

Let us dream of what we are and who we want to be, entangled in sheets of play and sweet, of rush and blossom, of liquefying feelings we never knew existed...

Let me stop. Or, don't.

I knew one day I'd have to have Lost Cherry in my collection and it couldn't be more fitting for me. Besides how it shines standing alone, it also layers beautifully with most of my fragrances in my collection.

In the fragrance family of warmth and spice, the key notes of this beautiful fragrance consist Black Cherry, Tonka Bean and Almond. Tom Ford describes the Black Cherry as "candy-like" with liqueur, Turkish Rose alongside a gorgeous Jasmine Sambac Blend. There's a maturity to it that's so... not, that it makes it so unique.

Lost Cherry Eau De Parfum by Tom Ford

Though I would've hoped its lasting power would be a little longer, I will always have Lost Cherry in my collection. And yeah, the price is hefty — and quite hefty, at that, but it's a moment in time and a moment that lasts forever beyond the first spray.

Outright, this fragrance is formidable in the safest way possible. It invites the utmost sensuality and thirst of infatuation the second it lands on my skin. It's devour worthy and I fancy every second of it. Fondness, frenzy, inclination and craving... Sentiments that come too close to it, but I'll do it over and over again.

Let me go satisfy this craving...

Review: Youth To The People Triple Peptide + Cactus Oasis Serum

Let’s get away and find our peace in this oasis.

This complex formula wrapped in a beautiful apothecary styled bottle has truly become a staple in my routine and a flirtatious stare down on my shelf. Amplified with 4D Hyaluronic Acid alongside many other unique ingredients, I’m so thrilled to be breaking down the product in my review for you today after testing it for over a month and a bit.

Triple Peptide + Cactus Oasis Serum

My skin type: Balanced/dry.

Ideal for: Dry, combination, oily and sensitive skin types. (But I gotta tell ya — friends with dehydrated skin and a compromised barrier will love Oasis!)

Product details:

Triple Peptide + Cactus Oasis Serum is a pro-grade vegan™ triple-peptide hydrating serum. Infused with 4D hyaluronic acid, the serum intensely hydrates, instantly plumps and visibly smooths and firms the skin to allow for a healthy barrier. This special formula intertwines an organic cactus elixir that is a literal drink of water for the barrier, delivering hydration, plumpness and bouncy skin.

Instantly — Instantly plumps, deeply hydrates and visibly smooths.

Product claims with continued use:

  • Instantly plumps + smooths

  • Deeply hydrates + helps skin sustain moisture

  • Encourages skin to act, feel, + look younger

  • Protects against accelerated signs of aging

Dessey tip: For people that have a similar skin type as mine, I enjoy layering 2-3 layers in the evening time. It really packs a punch! It also works beautifully under makeup to allow for a healthy, dewy finish.

Texture and scent:

Texture — Lightweight, gel-like, silky.

Scent — Fragrance-free.

How to use:

Apply Oasis on clean skin. Applying on damp skin allows for added hydration. Youth To The People recommends following up with Superfood Moisture Cream or Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream.

Key ingredients:

— Triple peptide blend partnered w/ MVP Sapphire Lift:

3 peptides: Matrixyl 3000 (Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 + Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1) and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-28

The innovative technology in this blend uses sapphire for an advanced delivery in the formula. The partnering helps with reducing the appearance of fine lines, rough skin texture and sagging.

— 4D Hyaluronic Acid:

3 different molecular weights (Low, medium and high): Sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer, sodium hyaluronate, sodium acetylated hyaluronate, hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate

Nourishing and replenishing the dermis to the epidermis, the 4D blend delivers multi-dimensional hydration.

— Polyglutamic Acid: As one of my favourite ingredients at the moment, it absorbs water of its own weight approximately 5000 times. Talk about hydration!

— Mineral Extract: Benefits of the mineral extract include cell detoxification and added antioxidant benefits. Naturally blue in tone, mineral extract are rich in trace elements and copper.

Organic Cactus Elixir (Mibelle): A unique ingredient recently discovered for me, Mibelle works wonders for sensitive and sensitized skin. Calming irritated skin, it also blocks the release of stress markers from sensory nerve cells in the skin. It has a high content of water-binding compounds to deliver optimal hydration to the skin.

— Rambutan peel extract (Hairy Fruit): Another unique ingredient for me, Hairy Fruit is nourishing and supports natural ceramide production. It energizes the skin and directly quoted from YTTP, increase taurine transporter and taurine greater water retention.

My experience + thoughts

It truly goes beyond the hydration. And I want it all.

Over the last year, my skin barrier has been completely compromised due to environmental stressors, harsh weather changes and day to day stress. With that not only comes congested skin but also sensitized/dull skin. One of the key steps to a healthy barrier is HYDRATION, HYDRATION, HYDRATION! Hydration is a healer and I’m so happy to have incorporated Oasis into my routine. I can't even begin to tell you the silky feel I get once applied. It’s magical, honestly. But what’s even more magical is how I’ve been able to optimize my skin health with using it consistently. It’s also helped so much with sings of aging under the eye area which is of course super delicate and needs to be treated with immense care. (S/O to the peptide blend — in love!) Alongside that, Oasis has been a treat to layer under my moisturizers. It sinks in beautifully, not too heavily but with a stunning viscosity to sit and protect the barrier. The one thing I love most about it, though, is the soothing properties from the Organic Cactus Elixir. I also have a lot of redness so any formulas with really powerful and calming ingredients is something I yearn for in my skin care. All in all, a complete and utter win.

The aesthetician in me is absolutely devouring this ingredient list head to toe on paper and I’m so impressed by its complexity. Superfoods and science — Incredible, right?

Please keep in mind that I’m in Canada which means I review my products with a Canadian price tag/conversion in mind.

Packaging and user experience: The apothecary package is breathtaking to me. Can we talk about this beautiful blue hue? I can’t wait to see more of this energy in future launches. It mimics the same bottle as their Vitamin C serum which I absolutely adore with an easy, smooth pump.

Does a little go a long way? For my personal preference, I usually go in with 3-4 pumps so I’d say if you have more dehydrated skin, you may need an extra pump or two.

Would I repurchase? A million times over.

Do I think it’s worth $68.00 CAD? With its complexity of a formula inevitably comes with a higher price point. Now, of course hydrators vary in price point due to their strength in complexity and results. With Oasis in particular, it delivers beyond hydration for me as mentioned in my experience so I do think it’s worth the price point.

Review: Eilish Fragrance by Billie Eilish

Living in a universe that is so deeply connected to emotion through fragrance is an otherworldly reality to live in — Magical, spellbound and arousing at times, if you will.

Billie has brought forth a vessel to bring us closer to her through her first ever fragrance launch, 'Eilish.' Scent has been known to be something so special and personal to Billie for so long in her day to day and through her synesthesia, so releasing a fragrance comes to no surprise but one that is so beautiful and unique to the world. It just makes so much sense, and I'm so thrilled to have it on my shelf. As someone working in the beauty space myself, of course I knew this launch would mean everything to me, more so because it’s Billie.

For me, fragrance is a vessel to intend my feelings that pen and paper simply cannot. It's the ability to feel tactility from memories through a spray or two, so perplexing and mysterious... Yet so straightforward, so unmistakable. The feeling of being so present yet being brought back all at once; That is the beauty of the olfactory experience, one so intimate, one so particular.

Oneness.

Seeing as Billie is my muse, I inevitably have a deep connection tied to the fragrance. When I sprayed it for the first time, ‘Eilish’ evoked a familiarity that I knew nothing of yet one that I’d been longing for, bringing me to tears, beautiful reassuring tears. I’ve never felt closer to her than I do right now…

With an open heart, nose and mind, I instantly fell in love with ‘Eilish’ after one spray. Quite frankly, I never want to be without it now, so allow me to happily share why.

Eilish by Billie Eilish
To note:
Billie Eilish Fragrances claims to be vegan, cruelty free and paraben free.

Fragrance family: Amber Gourmand

Fragrance type: Eau de Parfum

Key descriptors/fragrance claims:

  • Unisex

  • Warm

  • Magnetic

  • Sensual

  • Alluring

  • Powerful

“I wanted it to feel like a warm embrace. It’s a scent that I’ve been chasing for years and years and years. It’s my favorite smell in the world.” - Billie Eilish

Notes:

Top — Delicate sugared petals, juicy mandarin, red berries

Heart — Soft spices, rich cacao, creamy vanilla

Base — Sweet woods, alluring musk

View the full ingredient list for ‘Eilish’ here.

My experience + thoughts

I’ve experienced love at first spray and tears of wonderment many times with fragrance, but nothing like the fondness I have with ‘Eilish.’

Leaving room for both peacefulness and playfulness, ‘Eilish’ is a blanket of cashmere cacao kisses, gently kissing each part of your skin as velvety fresh snowflakes land on every crevice. Nostalgia and tenderness come to say hello and for a second, all feels well in the world.

This fondness I speak of is so unique for me that it’s quite difficult to put into words. To me, this fragrance encompasses all that is Billie through sentiments of warmth, comfort and peace with a little bit of mystery. I swear, the second I sprayed this I told myself, “It’s so precious and sweet yet so, so sexy all at the same time. It allows for a youthfulness, a wave of sunshine in the sweet warmth of safety.”

Described as an Amber Gourmand fragrance, it is precisely that. Going back to the notes, the rich cacao is most prominent to me, even more than the vanilla, which is bold to say considering it’s been described as a vanilla lover’s go-to by critiques and fans around the world. Though yes, I’d have to agree, it is a vanilla lover’s dream without being too overpowering and sweet. It actually has a sparkly, fresh kick to it in the beginning as I spray it again, realizing that while typing this. It’s intoxicatingly good.

Now, where do the delicate sugared petals, juicy mandarin, red berries come into play? I’d say as it settles down, although the more I wear it, the more I experience the freshness from the top notes right away alongside the cacao at first spritz. Interesting enough, the blend of warmth from the cacao and vanilla with the spice/freshness from woodiness and musk work incredibly well together. The longer it dries down, the more you get that “skin” scent, that musk, perhaps even a gentle tonka bean kick.

You know, I think one of the things I love most about this fragrance is how it lingers throughout the day. At some moments, I sense more creaminess and others more freshness. It’s so beautiful to me. And speaking of lingering, I remember wearing it to bed the other night and when I woke up in the morning, the scent still trailed every so gently through my white sheets and honestly, I hadn’t felt that at peace in a very long time. A cloud in my complete and utter bed peace.

Some say Billie played it safe by going with a vanilla perfume, but on the contrary I think it’s quite complex with the way it plays on me throughout the day. Some also say they expected a more “edgier” fragrance to reflect her brand/image, but that makes me think — What does image have to do with essence? Billie is ever evolving. For me, ‘Eilish’ is Billie’s essence and always has been, through warmth, comfort and softness, words I’d describe her aura with, whether she had dark hair sitting in her old bedroom with red sheets or in a vintage chair with blonde hair.

Here’s a collage of photos of Billie that I connect the fragrance to.

Packaging + user experience

The body that is one, a golden one.

“The inspiration for this campaign was an appreciation for the human body.  It’s really about embracing yourself, being confident, and loving how you look and the way you feel. I wanted it to be very inviting, but also intimidating, comforting and a little bit romantic and dreamy.” - Billie Eilish

Besides the vessel holding its own weight as a statement in my perfume closet (quite literally, the thing is STURDY), it makes for such a beautiful decor piece, one that invites feeling of mystery, lust and curiosity to those unfamiliar with it. I love that when you open the cap, you see the glass rectangular bottle holding the perfume peek through the bust of the body of the vessel. It was so elegantly thought out. (It also photographs BEAUTIFULLY. I mean look at it…)

It’s so exciting to see Billie dive into the beauty space, debuting with a fragrance launch.

Ideal for: All skin types and ideal for sensitive skin.

Product details:

The Superberry Dream Cleansing Balm is going to be the first step of your skin care routine and acts as the first cleanse. Packed with their signature Dream Oil blend alongside a ton of skin nourishing ingredients, this balm quickly melts away makeup, SPF, dirt, sebum and other impurities. PEG-free, it rinses off clean with a soft to the touch feel, no greasy sticking.

Product claims:

100% vegan ingredients - Recyclable packaging - Made in USA - No animal testing - No parabens- No PEGS - No phthalates - No dimethicone

Dessey tip: Leave on the cleansing balm as a mask for 10 minutes before rinsing off! This will allow for soft and moisturized skin after rinsing it off.

Texture and scent:

Texture — Waxy, soft.

Scent — Juicy and reminiscent to the Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Oil.

How to use:

As your first step, scoop a bit of the cleansing balm into the palm of your hands. Warm it up and start massaging it directly onto your skin. Once you see all your makeup and impurities rinsing off, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water to watch it emulsify. Follow up with your second cleanse, a water based cleanser. (Hey, you know my favourite cleanser of all time is the Youth To The People Superfood Cleanser!)

Key ingredients:

— Dream Oil Blend: Moringa, Jojoba and and Sunflower Seed Oils. Moringa Seed Oil is packed with sources of omegas, antioxidants, and vitamins A, C, and E. Jojoba Seed Oil is rich in essential fatty acids and acts as a non-greasy emollient, leaving the skin feeling soft and moisturized.

— Superberry Extracts: Maqui, Açai, Goji Berry. Full of antioxidant compounds like flavonoids and anthocyanins. Help the skin defend against oxidative damage*

— Prickly Pear: Rich in antioxidants, polyphenols, and soothing amino acids, this hydrating cactus plant extract is a well loved ingredient we know from the Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Oil.

— Oil-Soluble Hyaluronic Acid: Leaving the skin conditioned, this oil-soluble HA holds importance with three molecular weights to reach past the dermis layer of the skin.

My experience + thoughts

Out of every review I’ve ever written, this has to be my most conflicting and challenging one yet. I tested the balm out in so many different ways that at one point, I even triple cleansed one night because I wanted it to work so genuinely. But it just wasn’t doing it for me.

To cut straight to it, I’m still completely undecided whether I like it or not — And I’ll tell you why. But before I do, I want to make a statement regarding the way I view product. As an aesthetician and writer, I do my best to allow two factors coexist together: The personal user experience and product breakdown/education piece. Both of those factors can coexist in their own ways clearly when expressed properly, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do for you here. As I practice that method in all my reviews and with my clients, I always encourage others to be able to differentiate the user experience and the product itself. Not everything will work for everyone, but we can look at a product’s ingredient list and say “Hey, this is formulated beautifully, but it just didn’t work for me. And that’s okay.”

Let’s start off with the fact that this has been one of Youth To The People’s most anticipated launches yet. As their Superfood Cleanser being their best selling SKU and my favourite skincare product of all time, I had no doubt that the balm would hold close to it. Now you might be thinking… “It’s a cleanser. It’s not a serum. It can’t be THAT complicated, right?” Well, two things. One — Cleansing is in fact my favourite skincare step, so I had my hopes high. Secondly, cleansing IS the most important step in any skincare routine (alongside SPF) to ensure all impurities are removed to then follow with a clean canvas for balanced pH levels and proper product absorption to come.

So, you see — I don’t not like it, but I wasn’t rejoicing when I used it for the first time. The easiest way to break this down is my current pros and cons list, so here we go.

Superberry PROs:

  • The packaging is phenomenal. The jar feels luxurious and beautiful in hand.

  • The ingredient list is leading and avant-guard which comes to no surprise as every Youth To The People product is. From my aesthetician standpoint, I think they formulated the balm beautifully with all the different omegas, antioxidants and vitamins to ensure a protected barrier during and post cleansing. I’m extremely impressed but not surprised — Their chemists always knock the product formulas out of the park.

  • The balm does remove all traces of makeup and impurities.

Superberry CONs:

  • Scooping up the balm is quite difficult as it crumbles as soon as I scoop it out the jar.

  • Even though I warmed it up in the palm of my hands for a solid bit before massaging it onto my skin, I find it didn’t become that oily and still had a wax-y feel once massaging it onto my face.

  • It took a lot of elbow grease for me to massage it everywhere, but after using it a couple of times I just don’t think a little goes a long way. The more I use, the easier it is to melt onto the skin.

  • It didn’t emulsify as creamy as I thought it would and I personally enjoy that in a first cleanse. (Emphasis on personal as it doesn’t have to emulsify creamy for it to be working. This is just personal preference!)

Overall

  • The balm does leaves the skin soft after rinsing it off but I didn’t find there to be any “wow” feeling after rinsing. It just was like, “Yeah, okay. I did my first cleanse. Now what?”

I do think most skin types would enjoy this. My skin is extremely dehydrated and acne prone at the moment so I feel my barrier is compromised and wondering if this is playing into why I’m not head over heels for the balm, although… it shouldn’t really make a difference since it’s just cleansing.

So, here we are. I’ve been going back and forth whether I really like it or not. Because I don’t hate it. Some nights I find it easier to use than others. For now, it’s just not a standout to me and that’s okay. I think why I rated it the way I did currently is because I simply didn’t experience the one thing I wanted to: The thrill of it. Cleansing is my favourite step so yes, I’m diving deep into this review.

Truthfully, some nights I like it, some I’m “meh” over it. I do see myself liking this more and more, so if you want to see if my opinion changes, head over to my Instagram to catch up!

Packaging + user experience

The frosted jar is truly one of the most beautiful parts of the whole experience. It feels so nice to hold. Scooping it is very difficult for me as it crumbles quickly.

Overview

★ ★ ★ .5 as it stands right now, but my thoughts are constantly evolving with this one.

Price: $34.00 USD / $45.00 CAD for 3.45 oz/ 100mL

Please keep in mind that I’m in Canada which means I review my products with a Canadian price tag/conversion in mind.

Does a little go a long way?

It took a lot of elbow grease for me to massage it everywhere, but after using it a couple of times I just don’t think a little goes a long way. The more I use, the easier it is to melt onto the skin.

Would I repurchase?

For right now, I can’t tell just yet.

Do I think it’s worth $45.00 CAD?

If the balm was a 5/5, yes. It’s hard for me to justify the balm price with my personal user experience but I do think it’s worth the money when discussing ingredients and ounces per $.

Review: Gisou Honey Infused Face Oil

Honey, we’re going head to toe.

Amsterdam based and worldwide loved hair care brand Gisou has launched their first ever hero complexion product, the Honey Infused Face Oil. Known for their beloved Honey Infused Hair Oil first alongside many of my favourites including the Honey Infused Hair Perfume and Propolis Infused Heat Protecting Spray, the skin care lover and aesthetician in me is super stoked to break down their first ever skin care product with you today. (Spoiler, it’s so stunning…)

Gisou is born out of a passion for honey bees and haircare. Read all about Gisou by Negin Mirsalehi here.

Honey Infused Face Oil

My skin type: Balanced/dry.

Ideal for: All skin types.

Product details:

The Honey Infused Face Oil is an antioxidant rich oil packed with Mirsalehi honey, natural actives and freshly cold-pressed botanical oils from the Mirsalehi Bee Garden. Fast absorbing, this oil is ideal for morning and evening use. Made to nourish the skin, this beautiful blend of oils delivers a ton of additional healing and brightening properties all together.

Good to know:

From the Gisou site: Gisou Honey Infused Face Oil is inspired by the rich botanical sources of the Mirsalehi Bee Garden, where our founder Negin, and her father, continue the 6-generation family tradition of beekeeping. Our unique formula is enriched with sustainably-sourced ingredients, selected for their natural beauty benefits. Made with 95.7% cold-pressed oils Keep in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Dessey tip: If you accidentally squeeze out too much from the dropper, use the rest to hydrate your cuticles!

Texture and scent:

Texture — Thin-medium texture, soft to the touch while feeling incredibly nourishing.

Scent — Honey-ish? (I was scared it was going to mimic the scent of the Honey Infused Hair Oil and thankfully it didn’t, or else it would’ve really thrown me off!)

How to use:

Apply 2-3 drops and massage onto your skin. Gisou recommends to use it as the last step in your routine, but in my opinion, I think it can be used without a moisturizer on top as it’s very nourishing on its own. I personally like to use my oils before my creams, but go with whatever you’re most comfortable with.

Key ingredients:

— Mirsalehi Honey: Straight from the Mirsalehi bee garden, honey is a potent antioxidant that nourishes and heals the skin while helping prevent moisture loss.

— Safflower Oil: An occlusive known to fight free radicals, rich in vitamin E and Linoleic acid to moisturize.

— Evening Primrose Oil: An emollient to help balance the skin high in Omega 6 & 9 that allows for a fresh complexion.

— Rosehip Seed Oil: Known for its healing, brightening and conditioning properties.

— Vitamin E: A powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin barrier from any free radical damage.

My experience + thoughts

For what it’s worth… I absolutely think it’s worth it.

I’ve been using the oil for a little bit now and I can confidently say that my dry, dehydrated skin is loving it. It sinks in like a dream and leaves my skin silky and soft to the touch in the morning while also aiding in redness reduction. I really look forward to seeing how my skin enjoys it over time, but for right now I absolutely adore it. I notice that my complexion is more balanced (less redness, more even skin tone) in the mornings after using this in the evenings. I think what’s great is that the texture isn’t too heavy for morning but ideally nourishing for my nighttime routine which makes it easy to use AM and PM. I’m super stoked to have this in my routine right now — and a great addition to my routine for the colder months.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect. From hair to face, I’m surprisingly impressed but I’m not surprised because I know the sourcing of the honey is high up in quality. I really look forward to seeing what other face and body products Gisou introduces!

Packaging + user experience

A glass bubble jar, easy dropper like their hair oil. Beautiful.

Do I think it’s worth $74.00 CAD? Although the ingredient list isn’t *that* complex, I think it’s worth the price for the high quality sourcing of the honey and propolis from the Mirsalehi Bee Garden alongside the fact that a few drops go a long way.

Product details:

The Mandelic Acid + Superfood Unity Exfoliant is a pro-grade vegan™ leave-on exfoliator that blends three gentle acids and superfood antioxidants together to allow for a smoother, healthier and balanced skin barrier. Through a gentle exfoliation, the toner aids in fading dark spots, decongesting the skin and boosting hydration.

Instantly — Calms down redness and irritation.

With continued use — Minimizes the appearance of pores, aids in diminishing hyperpigmentation/discoloration and texture.

Product claims:

  • Gently exfoliates + cleared pores

  • Evens skin tone + fades dark spots

  • Smooths skin + controls congestion

  • Boosts hydration + supports barrier health

Dessey tip: Excessive redness? This pairs beautifully with the Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream.

Texture and scent:

Texture — Water-light liquid.

Scent — Fresh and light like superfoods and Tea Tree oil, if you will.

How to use:

After cleansing, saturate a cotton pad (reusable if you can!) with the solution. Sweep over the skin avoiding the eye area. You can also apply the solution by applying a bit into the palms of your hands and pressing it into the skin. I like both methods! Youth To The People recommends following up with their Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream.

Key ingredients:

— 3% Mandelic Acid (AHA): Mandelic acid is known to be one of the more gentle AHAs. It’ll help exfoliate the skin by shedding away dead skin cells and aids in hyperpigmentation/discoloration. AHA works wonders to smooth the skin.

— 2% Salicylic Acid (BHA): Salicylic acid is lipid-soluble which helps to decongest and aids to remove build up in the pores alongside minimizing the appearance of enlarged pores.

— 1% Gluconolactone (PHA): PHA is known to be a very gentle exfoliant. The Gluconolactone will help gently remove dead skin cells from the dermis with little irritation.

— Superfood Blend: Antioxidants, phytonutrients and essential vitamins from super greens kale, spinach and green tee aid to protect and fortify the skin for a healthy barrier.

— Glucosamine: A stellar compound to support hydration and aid in brightening.

— Licorice Root: An antioxidant to aid in discolouration and fade the look of dark spots. Licorice Root is also great to help soothe the skin.

My experience + thoughts

The results speak for themselves while my gratification is celebrated through a healthy skin barrier. A stellar launch.

3 uses

3 uses

Toning and exfoliating are two of my favourite steps in my routine. Though I’ve tried many, there’s nothing like the Unity Exfoliant. It thrills me that I can incorporate an exfoliating toner into my routine on a daily basis without it being too irritating or heavy! After just three uses, the Unity Exfoliant left me stunned with results I’d only dreamed of — Aiding in redness reduction and texture. I know for a fact I’ll always have this gem on my top shelf forever. Youth To The People continues to bring innovation to the beauty world through their incredibly unique formulas and this one doesn’t fall short.

With no stinging or irritation, the formula has a ton of calming ingredients that help soothe the skin upon application. Nonetheless, it is still an exfoliant so be sure to use it accordingly with SPF as your last step in your morning routine!

Mandelic Acid + Superfood Unity Exfoliant VS. Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Toner

UNITY EXFOLIANT — Gentle for daily use to help balance the skin’s pH levels, gently exfoliate, smooth and hydrate.

KOMBUCHA TONER (Read my review here) — An exfoliant for 1-2 times a week. Kombucha Power Toner is a triple-action power toner that’ll smooth skin texture, minimize the appearance of pores and firm the look of skin. Formulated with a blend of 8% lactic acid and 3% glycolic acid, this powerhouse of AHAs delivers deep exfoliation and balanced skin. With the Kombucha Black Tea and Tree Bark ferments, they work as prebiotics to enhance the skin’s natural microbiome. This helps break down overproduction of natural oils to relieve congestions in the skin and allow for a radiant glow.

UNITY IS THE SOLUTION — A beautiful message intertwining both skincare and real-life.

Packaging + user experience

Ten times more convenient than the Kombucha toner’s packaging, the Unity Exfoliant now has a flip cap instead of a twist cap. The glass bottle is beautiful and sits elegantly on my vanity.

Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask

2021-03-30_YTTP Power Mask_desseydoll_10.PNG

My skin type: Balanced/dry.

Recommended for: Blemish-prone, oily and combination skin types. (Friends with visible blackheads will love this, I can tell ya…)

Product details:

The Superclay Purify + Clear Power Mask is the first clay mask to be supercharged with high-performance niacinamide to purify pores and improve skin clarity.

Instantly — Deep cleans pores, absorbs excess oil and gently exfoliates.

With continued use — Pores are less visible, clearer complexion, even skin tone and strengthens the skin barrier.

Product claims:

  • Purifies and tightens pores

  • Clears skin and complexion

  • Absorbs excess oils and mattifies

Dessey tip: Although this claims to mattify, I can confirm that it leaves the skin with a soft-to-touch, radiant finish, all things considered with it being a clay mask.

Texture and scent:

Texture — Creamy.

Scent — Fresh and clean like superfoods.

Both the texture and scent of the Power Mask are reminiscent to the Superfood Skin Reset Mask, which is now discontinued. (But hello, the upgrade here!)

How to use:

Apply an even layer to the skin and leave the mask on for 10 minutes. Rinse off the mask and pat dry, following up with your favourite moisturizer. YTTP recommends their Superfood Air-Whip Moisture Cream. Use the mask 1-3 times a week or as needed.

Key ingredients:

— French Green Clay (Kaolin Clay): Absorbs excess oil and extracts impurities from the skin without drying out active acne.

— White Clay (Kaolin Clay): Draws away excess oils while smoothing and softening the skin without stripping, drying or sensitizing the skin barrier.

— Volcanic Clay (Bentonite Clay): A mineral-rich clay that detoxifies the skin by removing environmental stressors, excess grime and congestion that leads to blemishes.

— Niacinamide (2%): Visibly tightens pores, promotes elasticity and improves skin clarity.

— Kombucha Black Tea: Contains potent peptides that’ll work as prebiotics to enhance the skin’s natural microbiome.

— BHA: An oil-soluble exfoliator that helps unclog and clear pores.

— Red Willow Bark: Soothes and calms the skin while helping reduce visible redness.

— Blue Algae: Rich in antioxidant vitamins and minerals to help get rid of environmental stressors and free radials.

My experience + thoughts

It was the instant results that did it for me. I mean… look.

2021-03-30_YTTP Power Mask_desseydoll_2.JPG

To rewind, the Superfood Skin Reset Mask was my all time favourite face mask. When I found out it was discontinued to be upgraded to something more innovative, I hope I’d fall in love with it just as deeply. And to my not-surprise, I did. After just one use, I knew this was top shelf status for me. The Power Mask holds its own weight beautifully.

With a heavy amount of congestion with our face masks accompanied by environmental stressors, maskne is inevitable. Not only did the Power Mask instantly decongest my skin, (especially the cheeks and chin), but it helped soothe redness and calm down any active breakouts by “flattening” them without drying them down. What’s super cool is that you can SEE the mask working while it’s drying down on the more congested areas of the face. For a clay mask, I’m almost shocked at how soft and hydrated my skin feels after rinsing it off.

Quite frankly, the Power Mask is the quickest performing product I’ve ever tried. Not only do I just freaking love it for how rapid I see results, but I love that it’s an upgrade to my favourite OG Superfood Mask packed with tons of incredible ingredients. So, if you’re a Superfood lover like me, I know you’ll absolutely fall in love with this one too. I use the mask about twice a week while incorporating my other YTTP favourites within the routine. (The Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Oil after rinsing it off — trust me.)

The message of power manifesting within us translates so well not only with this launch but the company as a whole. Power to the people. Power to love. Power to you. Power to me.

Review: Crabtree & Evelyn Bali Rice Exfoliating Cleanser

It’s the soothingness, for me.

My experience + thoughts

A keeper.

As someone who likes to switch up her ways of exfoliating, powder based cleansers are always my preferred way to physically exfoliate when it’s not chemical. The Rice Exfoliating Cleanser is such an easy cleanser to incorporate in any routine, honestly. I love the way it froths and it doesn’t strip my skin. With a minimal ingredient list, the cleanser is packed with soothing ingredients and gentle enough to use every one to two days.

Packaging + user experience

I absolutely love the bottle. It dispenses the powder in small doses so it’s not overflowing at once.

Review: Nécessaire The Deodorant - Fragrance Free

After testing multiple organic, natural, drugstore WHATEVER deodorants, I’ve found the one to truly combat odour with added skin-loving benefits — and I couldn’t be happier. Yeah, it’s Nécessaire’s The Deodorant in Fragrance Free.

2020-12-01_Nécessaire The Deodorant_desseydoll_5.PNG

Never in my life did I think I’d want to justify spending $28.00 CAD on a deodorant, but here I am, a smile and happy underarms with no odour and sweat later. Now, with that being said…

Growing up, drugstore deodorants worked perfectly fine for me. I don’t have an issue with sweat, but my goal with a good deodorant was always and still is to combat odour, which — by the way — is so normal. Before immersing myself in this vast, innovative world of beauty and skincare, I never would've fathomed spending more than $10.00 CAD on a shampoo and conditioner, $6.00 CAD on a deodorant, simply because that’s what I had in my shower (which worked perfectly fine), but also, I wasn’t exposed to higher end, luxury brands with different formulations than I am now over the last four years, (which is also perfectly fine). For some reason, I still feel puzzled with how I got myself to spend essentially $30.00 CAD on a deodorant even though I love it so much. I guess because it’s just deodorant? I could justify spending double that on a candle, but… it’s fine. Although I feel puzzled, this purchase has prompted a lot of introspection which has me thinking about the way I spend my money and how I view product in 2020. Maybe I’ll write a post on this at a later time. Remember that everyone is entitled to spend their money as they please and quite frankly no one should ever have to explain themselves. I’m just reflecting out loud here.

“Des, why look for a new deodorant if the drugstore ones worked fine?” Well, for one, the esthetician in me craves to discover innovative formulas while the other part of me is always looking for products that go beyond one claim, especially in a deodorant. (Hi, exfoliation and brightening properties!) Also, I know what else you’re thinking. “Are you looking for a natural deodorant because you want aluminum free, organic, bla bla bla?” Eh, not much has been proven and studied with deodorant. I just want something that works and has added benefits beyond just combatting odour, which is why I really love this one.

Onto the review and despite my at sea thoughts, Necessaire’s The Deodorant in Fragrance Free is truly my favourite deodorant ever. From the formula to application to results, I’m pleased to say that after only one use, I knew it was going to be the one for me.

Dessey tip: Try applying it onto your fingertips and then massage it on the underarm area. It’s a great application hack!

2020-12-01_Nécessaire The Deodorant_desseydoll_3.JPG

My experience:

A million times yes. A deodorant to combat odour and help exfoliate all at once? Baby…

I’m so incredibly impressed with this find. After testing out so many natural deodorants that haven’t helped with combatting odour but in fact have added to it (in a negative way), I truly do feel that Nécessaire’s is a powerful shield to protect and treat the underarm area in more ways than one. With Lactic and Mandelic Acid part of the formula, I’ve noticed smoother and brighter underarms after a few weeks using this. Keep in mind, I’m currently doing laser hair removal on my underarms so of course there are many different factors that have helped with brightening and texture, but the deodorant has definitely made an impact. (My laser sessions are currently ever six weeks which is how I’ve been able to notice a difference). The main reason I wanted to try this is because I just wanted something to help with odour beyond blocking it for less than a few hours. This one lasts the whole day. And as an esthetician, I’m always moving around and I haven’t felt the need to reapply. I don’t sweat much either, so that’s a plus.

I’d say to be careful applying it after shaving or exfoliating your underarm area because it does have exfoliating properties already in the formula. I’ve done it a couple of times after shaving and my underarms tingled a bit, which was to be expected, but I’d wait a few minutes before applying the deodorant at that point.

Does a little go a long way? Ish? I think so. I usually don’t massage the product right away on application, but dab a bit on each underarm and then massage it in circular motions to maximize the product usage.

Packaging + user experience

I absolutely love it! I feel like I read someone say it got a bit messy with the cream / twist component combo, but as long as you twist the packaging the other way (as if you’d be twisting a lipstick back into its component) and wipe any residue with a napkin afterwards, everything stays super clean.

Price: $20.00 USD / $28.00 CAD for 50ml / 1.7 fl oz

Do I think it’s worth $28.00 CAD? Look. I say yes only because it has added benefits beyond helping combat odour, but I still don’t understand the concept of spending $28.00 CAD on a deodorant, for me, at least. But like, it’s in my cart.

Please keep in mind that I’m in Canada which means I review my products with a Canadian price tag / conversion in mind.

Would I repurchase? Yes, I would. I want to try the fragrance range next!

Review: The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser

Long awaited, I’ve been so excited to share my thoughts on one of my favourite cleansers that’s super affordable, super gentle and so lovely to use. The Ordinary’s Squalane Cleanser quickly became a favourite for me after only two uses and I’m happy to say I’ll always have one open on my shelf.

Product details

The Squalane Cleanser is a gentle moisturizing cleanser targeted to remove makeup and leave the skin feeling smooth.

Dessey tip: I personally use this as my second cleanse in my double cleansing routine. It works great!

Recommended for:

All skin types. (If you have dry skin like me, I think you’ll love this!)

Texture and scent:

Texture — Creamy and gel like. This cleanser is a lightweight creamy gel texture that turns into a balm-oil type consistency after rubbing it in your palms for a few seconds.

Scent — Unscented.

How to use:

The Squalane Cleanser can be used as a first or second cleanse. If using it as a first cleanse, dispense the cleanser into the palm of your hands and massage it for 10 to 30 seconds, warming it up allowing it to turn into a balm-oil type texture. Massage it onto your dry face and melt away your makeup, then rinse. If using it as a second cleanse, massage it onto your skin after the first cleanse, then rinse.

With squalane being the first ingredient of this decently short ingredient list, you know moisture will be delivered instantly.

My experience + thoughts

A forever staple.

I’ve grown to love this cleanser so rapidly that there’s no way it’ll never be on my shelf moving forward. On my second or third bottle, the Squalane Cleanser works great for my dry skin. Leaving my skin soothed and moisturized, I enjoy using it as a single cleanse in the morning or as my double cleanse in the evening. It’s so gentle and helps reduce my redness. I say it works great in the morning for how gentle it is since I don’t usually wash my face with a cleanser in the morning. It leaves a creamy lather with no foam, just a gliding gel feeling. I’d recommend this to anyone and everyone who’s looking for an incredibly gentle and affordable daily cleanser.

All to say, it’s in my top three cleansers right now. A true favourite.

Packaging + user experience

In their classic squeeze bottle, The Ordinary’s tubes are easy to use and come in sleek, neutral packaging. I have no issues with the user experience! I also love that it comes in two sizes; 50mL and 150 mL.

Review: Then I Met You Calming Tide Gel Cream

Basking in the spring, almost summer sun, it’s time to switch out some products in our routines! Then I Met You’s newest launch next to their Honey Dew Lip Mask is such a great swap to a lightweight hydrator with their Calming Tide Gel Cream.

2020-05-07_TIMY Gel Cream_desseydoll_7.JPG

Calming Tide Gel Cream

My skin type: “Normal” to dry. I quote normal because everyone’s skin is “normal” and beautiful.

Then I Met You claims:

  • For all skin types

  • Cruelty free and vegan

  • Free of artificial colorants, parabens, synthetic fragrances, silicones and alcohol

Read Then I Met You’s philosophy here:

Product details

The Calming Tide Gel Cream is a “light-as-air” gel cream to boost hydration and allow for suppleness and firmness to the skin.

Dessey tip: Depending on the consistency, gel creams can also be used and layered as a serum — at least for me!

Recommended for:

All skin types. (I think my oily skin type friends will love this!)

Texture and scent:

Texture — Incredibly watery and lightweight. The cream dispenses as a water gel, and though it doesn’t “run” down, the second I massage it in, let alone touch it, it melts into the skin like water. If I had a scale, 5 being really thick, I’ll put this at a 1.

Scent — A refreshing and light hibiscus, Froot Loop type of vibe. Very scrumptious but subtle!

Ingredients:

— Tri-Tide Complex™: Featuring three powerful peptides that work well together to repair, firm and stimulate collagen production within the gel cream formula.

What are peptides? Peptides are made up of amino acids. When formed, combined and formulated a specific way, they make specific types of proteins. (Collagen, keratin, elastin).

— Niacinamide: An incredibly powerful ingredient to help smooth out skin texture, rebalance and brighten your complexion, aid with hyperpigmentation and reinforces elasticity.

Side note: I'm on SUCH a Niacinamide kick lately. I’m so happy to see it’s part of this formulation!

— Hibiscus: With a ton of replenishing benefits, hibiscus seeds contain the highest concentration of lipid soluble antioxidants. It’s a natural plant extract vitamin E, vitamin C and polyphenols which are micronutrients that we get through a variety of plant-based foods.

— Ceramides: Ceramides help retain moisture and protect the skin barrier from any potential irritations. They are lipids that are comprised of your skin’s natural barrier.

Personally, my skin doesn’t really react well to ceramides, so I was initially a little worried to try it at first… It’s the 10th ingredient which is about top-middle in the ingredient list.

— Madecassocide: Known for its soothing and calming properties, Madecassocide is a major compound found in the centella asiatic plant. It aids in reducing redness, wound healing and reducing any inflammation.

Fun fact: Every time I see this ingredient, it brings me back to when I first got into K-Beauty. One of the first sheet masks I fell in love with had Madecassocide as its hero ingredient!

View the full ingredient list for the Calming Tide Gel Cream here.

I think the ingredient and formulation is gorgeous. I love the mix of plant-derived ingredients to powerful punches with Niacinamde and Madecassocide. With the five highlighted ingredients still being at the top of the ingredient list, it’s short and sweet. To note, there is Citrus Aurantium Bergamia Fruit Oil (Bergamot) at the bottom of the ingredient list which I personally don’t have any issues with as it’s the last ingredient that adds an aromatic experience alongside the hibiscus.

To note: This does not contain polyglutamic acid.

2020-05-07_TIMY Gel Cream_desseydoll_1.JPG

My experience + thoughts

An absolute burst of freshness.

To note before I go into my thoughts, I rarely, if ever, gear towards any type of water gel cream. My dry skin always thirsts for more, and usually they don’t sink in too well. With the exception of a few, I’ve grown to understand them more, including this beautiful pebble.

With ceramides in the formula, I was scared my skin would react negatively but it did the complete opposite. Every time I try a product with ceramides packed in it, my skin takes a hit resulting in texture around my cheeks and breakouts that last for a couple of days, then leave me alone. Taking my iffiness towards water gel creams into account, too, I’m so incredibly surprised with how much my skin loves this. For me, though, I can’t use this a cream. It’s INCREDIBLY thin and watery that I have to use it as a serum, which I don’t have a problem with! That being said, though, it’s SO hydrating and sinks into my skin like a dream. I don’t feel dry or dehydrated by the end of the day and notice that every time I use it, my redness around my cheeks soothes out and my skin tone looks and feels way more balanced and even.

I’ve tried it as a moisturizer alone and really enjoyed it, but enjoy it even more when I layer it with another moisturizer on top. Personally, I use it in the morning but since it’s now become more of a serum to me, I’ll have to try using it in the evening. It pairs beautifully with The Giving Essence which is another TIMY favourite of mine.

I love that a product can work differently in different ways, and that’s definitely the first thing I can say for this cream specifically. So personally, I’d recommend it as a serum for my dry skin friends and an incredibly refreshing moisture boost for my oily skin friends.

From its soothing properties to a boost of hydration, I’m so happy the Calming Tide Gel Cream is a winner for me.

Packaging + user experience

Can I just say that every detail in Then I Met You’s packaging, marketing and branding is completely and utterly immaculate? The delicate pebble design of the bottle feels so nice to hold and looks so precious on my shelf. It props up nicely with the little bend on the back like you can see above. It’s lightweight just like its formula.

Price: USD $42.00 / CAD $58.00 approximately converted for 50ml / 1.69 fl oz

Please keep in mind that I’m in Canada which means I review my products with a Canadian price tag / conversion in mind.

Does a little go a long way? I don’t know about a long way, but a good pea size or a tiny bit more works for me.

Would I repurchase? Probably, but only in the warmer months. Although this product has been kindly gifted by Then I Met you with no expectation to post, I’d say I’d purchase it with my own money but maybe not right away. I’m still playing around with it so my thoughts can always change!

Do I think it’s worth CAD $58.00? It’s a little steep. I’d much rather pay C$42.00 instead of the converted USD exchange to it totalling almost C$60.00. I think the ingredients are great so I can see it justifying a price point of CAD $42.00 much more than C$58.00. Reason being? I don’t see myself using this year round. If I did, I would say yes, but because I can’t, I’m not too sure! Price really does play into a product overview for me.

Review: Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser + Bamboo Booster

It didn’t start off smooth but now we’re the smoothest.

After months of testing the well recognized. cult-favourite cleansing balm by Drunk Elephant, it’s safe to say it’s a keeper. Although it took me a few tries to fully feel it out, I’ve grown to love it. Let’s dig into this review, shall we?

2020_04_03_DE_Cleansing Balm_desseydoll_3.JPG

Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser with Bamboo Booster

My skin type: “Normal” to dry. I quote normal because everyone’s skin is “normal” and beautiful.

Drunk Elephant claims:

100% Free of essential oils, silicones, fragrance and PEGs. Irritant-free. Cruelty Free.

Read Drunk Elephant’s philosophy here.

Product details

A cleansing balm that melts away makeup, sunscreen and water resistant formulas. Packed with antioxidant-rich fruit extracts and oils, Slaai aims to nourish and moisturize the skin while cleansing all at once. It also comes with a powder exfoliant, Bamboo Booster, which can be used as an additive to the balm to slough away dead skin cells.

Dessey tip: Remember that a cleansing balm / oil is meant to be used as your first cleanse on dry skin with no water just yet. To activate, massage the cleanser onto your skin and to emulsify and rinse off, use warm water. It won’t be effective with cold or room temperature. (This goes for any balm / oil cleanser!)

How to use:

Apply the balm onto dry skin, massage for a solid 60 seconds and emulsify/rinse with warm water. Add the Bamboo Booster to your cleanse to exfoliate. Personally, I wouldn’t use the Bamboo Booster if it’s with taking off makeup with the balm. Use it if it’s for a simple double cleanse! Exfoliation should be its own step, and in this case its own with the balm.

Recommended for: Normal, dry, combination, oily.

*I have a few friends with acne prone skin that really enjoy this, too!

Texture and scent:

The texture of Slaai is very rich and balm-y. The Bamboo Booster is gritty. Scent wise, the balm is unscented but for me, has odd notes of Play Dough or even a light grass-y scent?

My experience + thoughts

The third time really was a charm…

I’ve grown to love this product gradually. As someone who prides in putting a ton of importance in double cleansing, I always love trying new makeup removers, especially cleansing balms.

The first time I used it, I wanted to give up on it. The scent threw me off even if it’s unscented. Do you know what I mean? I’ll talk about the packaging in a bit, but what I do love is that it comes with a magnetic scoop that sticks to the lid which makes the experience of using the product that much easier. Scooping out some of the balm, I was in awe of how rich the formula was and how thicccccc the balm actually is.

Definitely a user error, I applied the balm directly onto my face without warming it up in my palms first which is why I probably didn’t like it at first. It was chunky, piece-y and just blah. I usually don’t have to if it’s a creamier balm like Farmacy’s, but you should always try to melt a balm cleanser in your palms first for easier application when massaging it onto the skin. As I started to warm up (literally) to the balm, I fell in love with it very quickly. I love how rich it felt on my skin and how it glided effortlessly. I don’t wear much makeup, but wow oh wow does it melt every inch of everything off. What I’ve learnt with this one is that you really have to make sure you warm it up in your palms well and cleanse for a solid minute, even two.

When it came to rinsing it off, I was a bit sceptical at first because I heard from many that it left a thick film, almost buttery. For me, it didn’t. Most people probably experienced it leaving a film either because a) they didn’t cleanse with warm water or b) they didn’t cleanse for long enough. For me, it leaves my skin so soft and moisturized after rinsing it off. As it's a first cleanse, following with my double cleanse (water based cleanser) feels great because my barrier doesn't feel dry from the beginning of my routine.

With the Bamboo Booster, it’s a cute little accessory to the balm but in my opinion, unnecessary. I’m a physical exfoliant kinda gal, especially with powders, but I find this one to be average. Very surface level, to say the least. It’s not too abrasive so if you’re more on the sensitive side, you should be fine with it. If anything, I like using it on my nose when I’m removing my makeup to really go in and clean my pores. I know I said I suggest not to use it with makeup, but the nose doesn’t matter to me. When I do use it, I’ll rinse off to 50% of the balm and then add it in.

Overall, a winner for me.

Packaging pros:

Solid jar, magnetic scoop? I’m in. Drunk Elephant has beautiful, sturdy packaging, so no complaints here!

Review: Frank Body In Your Dreams Sleep Scrub & Soak

Love me in and out of sleep.

This post is sponsored by Frank Body

This post is sponsored by Frank Body

With my fond love for their OG coffee scrub, it comes to no surprise that I fall in love with their new launches every time. Melting into the soothingness of this new, unique and beautiful scrub has genuinely felt like a dream, and I can’t wait to share my thoughts with you. Meet In Your Dreams Sleep Scrub & Soak, Frank’s first ever bath product.

My skin type (body):

Smooth, dry on the arms.

Claims:
Coffee free — 100% natural — Vegan & cruelty free

What is it?

A 2-in-1 scrub and soak to relax and recharge your body and allow for a peaceful sleep. The ingredients and oils are meant to melt away any tension in muscles, too!

Who’s it targeted for?

For tired and stressed skin.

How to use?

Whether you use it as a body scrub or a soak, this babe delivers the same results in different ways.

If using as a scrub, massage a handful of the scrub onto damp skin and let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse off. (My favourite way!)

If using as a soak, drop a handful into your bath and allow it to linger in the air and through your body. Oh, what a feeling.

Key ingredients:

Magnesium: Soothes muscles and decreases inflammation.
Epsom Salts: Exfoliates and soothes dry and tired skin.
Lavender Oil: Packed with antioxidants and used as an overall soother, allowing for some peacefulness.
Chamomile: Soothes PMS symptoms and helps tackle eczema & psoriasis.

Texture and scent:

Oh, a dream. This scrub is a little grittier than Frank’s traditional coffee scrubs, as epsom salts are a little more abrasive than coffee. Scent wise, you’re basically falling into lavender fields. Endlessly.

In_Your_Dreams_Review_desseydoll.JPG

My experience:

You came at the perfect time.

This scrub showed up at my doorstep at an ideal time. At a time where I needed extra relaxation, a sweet escape. We’re currently going through a lot as a whole, with the universe, the world. In times like these or times like any, making sure to embrace our bodies and overall wellness is more than important to nurture our souls.

With this scrub, I felt safe. I don’t take baths often, so using this as a body treatment while in the shower is an absolute treat. The second I hopped into bed, I not only melted into my sheets but felt a sense of relief. I was able to breathe in all the comfort it left me with, smoothness and calmness. I also love that I can use it to exfoliate like their other scrubs. With that being said, I love using this scrub specifically on my upper body where I can feel my muscles tense up most. But I do have to say, man, do my legs feel 40 pounds lighter when massaging it onto them too and hopping into bed.

Dessey tip: Stand in the shower, close your eyes. Grab a bit in your palms, add some water and let the scent linger through. Palms to your nose, breathe in, breathe out.

Review: Flash Instant Shine Mask by amika

Salon blowout or Flash Instant Shine Mask?

© desseydoll

If you know me, any hair product with the words “shine” swoon me over each time. When amika sent over the product information for this launch, I just new it was going to be for me. A desseydoll shower staple. And… what do ya know? She’s sitting and shining on my shelf. Let’s get into the review!

My hair type: Straight, coloured and medium thickness.

Flash Instant Shine Mask

Claims:
Colour safe — Cruelty free — Gluten Free — No mineral oil — Paraben free — Sulfate free

What is it?

A fast-acting hair mask that delivers moisture and shine in 60 seconds.

Who’s it targeted for?

For all hair types. amika recommends:
Fine and oily hair types — use in place of conditioner
Thick and dry hair types — use after conditioner

How to use:

Depending on your hair type, use as recommended.

Key ingredients:

Flaxseed to moisturize and soften the hair, antioxidants to hydrate and condition the hair to fight frizz and amino acids to help smooth the cuticle and boost hair elasticity.

Texture and scent:

Considering it’s a hair mask, it’s a pretty lightweight fluid that dispenses into a transparent texture that eventually foams up when massaging it in and rinsing. It has the signature amika scent, which we all know and love.

© desseydoll

My experience:

LOVE that shine for me, love that softness for me and love that lustfullness for me.

First try: I’m all about a good shine, and this mask is just it. My first time using it, I applied a good bit into my palm and applied it from root to tip after shampooing. Once I rinsed it off, I did notice my hair felt a little dry and not moisturized right away. I followed up with conditioner, wrapped my hair up in my favourite Aquis hair towel, and let it sit for a good 30 minutes. I usually let it sit until it becomes damp, then go ahead and blow-dry until 85% dry, then sleep. The second my hair touched the heat, I felt it. I felt the smooth, luscious results of the mask, instantly. I was a little worried it was going to stay dry from the shower stage, but man, it didn’t. I'm so incredibly impressed with how luxe and smooth it felt, almost as if i just got a blowout. Not to toot anything, but I have pretty shiny hair to begin with. The Instant Shine Mask is something I see myself using once a week for an extra boost — almost like a booster serum. Paired with amika’s Glass Action Universal Elixir, the gloss is here and here to say. The second time I used it, I applied it after my conditioner and liked the result even better.

Dessey tip: Before blowdrying, apply some of the Glass Action onto damp hair by distributing it quickly and evenly.

I look forward to continue testing this in different ways.

MY TOP 5 FAVOURITE WAYS TO USE FUR OIL

  1. Post shaving / waxing.
This is my number one favourite way to use Fur Oil. For my preference, I shave my legs and underarms and get my bikini waxed. (It’s just so much easier and takes up less time!) In general, I don’t have a lot of body hair. Ever since I started taking care of it, I’ve always made sure to moisturize post-shave or wax to ensure healthy and nourished skin. Using Fur Oil right after has helped tremendously, especially to soothe any present or potential irritations. I also love using it to condition hair until my next shave or wax appointment. It leaves my skin feeling so smooth, soothed and soft.

  2. As a body oil + mixer.
As someone who takes body care very seriously, I always condition my body with creams and oils after a shower. Using Fur Oil alone or mixed with a body creamed lathered all over me? A dream.

  3. Brow conditioner.
Quick and easy: Use Fur Oil to condition your brows. It’s packed with so many nutritious ingredients that’ll help soften hair, everywhere.

  4. Body spot treatment.
Use on any areas on the body that need extra care, including irritations, dry patches, itches, burns or anywhere you think needs it.

  5. As an overall skin treatment.
I can’t begin to tell you how Fur Oil has helped soothe and brighten darker areas of my skin, including underarms and between my thighs. It’s so comforting knowing there’s a product out there to help heal something I’m insecure about.

My experience: A never ending one.

I can’t even keep track how many full size and mini size bottles of Fur Oil I’ve finished to this date. Or have in my collection at the moment. Fur Oil is one of my favourite wellness and skin products I’ve ever had the pleasure of trying and continuously use in my day to day. It allows for a pleasant experience in my routine, not only on my hair but on my overall mindset of how I choose to take care of it. I’d recommend this to everyone and anyone, at anytime, morning, evening, in the bathroom, bedroom or anywhere in between.

Silk Scrub

What is it: A gentle and exfoliating body scrub.

What it does: Silk Scrub is meant to buff away dead skin cells using gentle acids as a hybrid for a soft physical exfoliant and powerful chemical exfoliant.

Key ingredients:

Jojoba Beads as an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic beads. They’ll unclog follicles to prevent ingrown hairs and remove excess sebum.

Papaya and Pineapple Enzymes to help gently exfoliate the skin. They’ll break down hair follicles to make pores appear smaller and fight inflammation.

Glycolic and Lactic acids used as the chemical part of the exfoliant. AHA’s will break down the bonds between the skin cells to enhance natural moisturizing abilities and brighten uneven skin tone.

Clary Sage Oil as an antibacterial essential oil and astringent to soothe redness alongside any post-shaving or waxing irritations.

View full ingredient list here.

Texture and scent: This scrub dispenses a super thin, soapy, creamy-like texture. When massaging it onto the skin, you feel the slightest physical exfoliation with the Jojoba Beads. It smells earthy with hints of Fur Oil.

How to use: Fur recommends when in the shower, massage Silk Scrub onto your skin—or, for extra exfoliation, leave it on as a mask for up to 10 minutes. View their full recommended use tips here.

My experience: She’s a keeper.

I really enjoy using this to help with texture, bumps, irritations and KP on arms and legs, especially between my thigh and bikini area about 2 times a week. I haven't found a scrub gentle enough to do so in those areas, and the fact that this has natural enzymes and acids really packs the punch in such a gentle way. I’ve also noticed a lot more brightening in the underarm and inner thigh areas. I’m a little impatient to be standing naked and wait for this to do it’s thing for 10 minutes as a body mask, so I like to massage it on the desired area for a good 2 minutes and then rinse. I’ve noticed a difference if used consistently, and I look forward to keeping and reaching for it on my shelf always.

Ingrown Concentrate

What is it: A healing and soothing treatment to help banish bumps and redness.

What it does: Ingrown Concentrate is made to irradiate ingrown hairs, sooth irritations and smoothing the skin while accompanied with a finger mitt. It’ll result in clean and smooth pores, even on the most sensitive skin types.

Key ingredients:

Coconut Oil to to help deeply penetrate hair follicles and moisturize the skin. It’ll help soften any ingrown hairs so that the removal process will be easier.

Tea Tree Oil as a powerful antimicrobial essential oil that eliminates excess sebum in the pores which helps prevent ingrown, bumps and allows the skin to heal quickly.

Tamanu Oil as a antimicrobial oil to help soften and moisturize the skin. Derived from the tamanu nut, this oil is packed with moisturizing omega fatty acids and antioxidants, promoting new and healthy cell growth.

Chamomile Extract to help calm the skin and soothe redness. This is a natural and powerful antioxidant that’s been used for ages.

Texture and scent: The Concentrate is a little thinner than Fur Oil, and smells a little more potent than it. Lemon-y, if you will.

How to use: Fur recommends to use the finger mitt to exfoliate around 3-5 times a week, and use the Ingrown Concentrate as many times as needed. View their full recommended use tips here.

My experience: A life-changing relief.

I found a red bump on my breast. The concern? Inevitable. For weeks, I was putting Fur Oil and creams to soothe it. The redness calmed down, but the bump was still there. So, I went to my dermatologist. "Despina, it's just an ingrown hair, and you have nothing to worry about. It'll go away with time." I was recommended a cream, and guess what? I didn't buy it. Something clicked in me to try my Ingrown Concentrate that I had yet to use, and I'm so happy I did. Weeks of worry and patience, the bump diminished, diminished and diminished more and more until it pretty much went away. I can't even begin to tell you how relieved I am to know there's a product out there that ins't filled with chemicals, that I can apply topically on such a delicate area on my body.

What it does: Stubble Cream is lightweight and fast-absorbing to maintain smoothness and help prevent ingrowns, bumps and razor burns.

Key ingredients:

Tea Tree Oil as a powerful antimicrobial essential oil that eliminates excess sebum in the pores which helps prevent ingrown, bumps and allows the skin to heal quickly.

Tapioca Starch as a moisturizer extracted from the cassava plant. Instead of using silicones that are usually found in creams, this natural ingredient replaces them.

Lavender Oil as a relaxing and aromatic scent booster, also used as an essential oil rich in antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

View full ingredient list here.

Texture and scent: This cream feels very liquid-like and melts into the skin instantaneously. There’s barely a noticeable scent, and if I have to put a name on it, maybe similar to Fur Oil.

How to use: Fur recommends using Stubble Cream after shaving, or between lasering or waxing sessions. View their full recommended use tips here.

My experience: Interesting. But all in good favour.

At first, I was a little thrown off with the texture of this cream. It dispensed more liquid-y than I thought, so that was something I had to get used to at first. I enjoy using this post waxing and shaving around my bikini and underarm area, as it also helps really keep those areas smooth and protected. I have to say, I don’t have many irritations a few days after using this cream. I think this is like the cream version of Fur Oil, but Fur Oil will forever win over this because it pretty much does the same thing for me, but a little more moisturized.

Texture and scent: The soaked-mitt smells exactly like Fur Oil. In regards to feel, it’s super gentle when massaging it onto the desired area. A tougher cotton, if you will.

How to use:

Fur suggests to use Ingrown Eliminator all over, on any bumps or ingrowns that need combatting. View their full recommended use tips here.

My experience: YUP!

I’m in love with these little ones.

I love how easy, convenient and biodegradable they are, first off. I love using the Ingrown Eliminator as a brightening treatment for my underarms and a soothing treatment for my bikini area. After the shower about once ever two weeks, I’ll take a mitt and gently massage it on my underarms which results in a brighter, smoother complexion. I noticed a difference in brightness in just a couple of uses, and I can say the same thing for the bikini area as well! It’s also great for the inner thigh area to help get rid of any post-shave / wax irritations. These mitts are a forever thing!

My experience: Refreshed and refreshed.

Ideal for after a run, post-gym or just a midday refresh. I love the concept of an on-the-go wipe, especially for those who have little physical mobility.

I really do enjoy using these wipes. They feel refreshing and clean, although I find them to be a little too soaked and fragrant. As much as I love the Fur Oil scent, it gets overwhelming when also mixed with sweat and bacteria. Overall, a great on-the-go treat especially for travel and ideal for a flight.

Review: Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner by Youth To The People

More power to me.

desseydoll_ YTTP Kombucha Toner_7.jpg

Now with a total of 10 products in their line, Youth To The People’s latest addition, Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner is a beautiful addition to complete the whole youth routine. Before launching, their team sent over the toner for me to test and I feel so empowered.

Youth To The People is 100% vegan, sustainable and clean cruelty free made in California.

Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner claims: Free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, pegs, mineral oil, silicones, artificial colours.

Suited for: All skin types.

Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner

What it is: An exfoliating toner.

What it does: Kombucha Power Toner is a triple-action power toner that’ll smooth skin texture, minimize the appearance of pores and firm the look of skin.

Key ingredients:

8% Lactic Acid and 3% Glycolic Acid to deliver exfoliation while still maintaining a healthy pH balance. The AHAs will revitalize dry and dull skin and help with cell turnover, smoothing skin texture and reduce the appearance of pores.

Kombucha Black Tea Ferment contains potent peptides that’ll work as prebiotics to enhance the skin’s natural microbiome.

Pichia Lysate Ferment (Tree Bark Ferment) to help restore the skin’s elasticity and help reverse any signs of oxidative damage.

Ginger Extract enhances the AHA’s ability to smooth skin texture. Ginger Extract is an effective anti-aging superfood!

Citrus Bioflavonoids with lemon water extract increase antioxidant activity. When paired with AHA’s, these flavonoids are delivered to the skin instantaneously and look for pollutants.

 View full ingredient list here.

Texture and scent: The Power Toner feels gentle on the skin. Once absorbed, it feels a little tacky but sinks in quickly. The scent is kombucha-y, subtle, obviously, but not overpowering. I personally don’t smell it when sweeping it across my face. I only smell something if I put my nose to the bottle.

How to use: Youth To The People recommends using the toner at night after cleansing, 3-5x per week.

View full recommended use details here.

My experience: Am I dreaming?

As I write this, I genuinely feel speechless looking back at how my skin looked after only two days of using the toner. I’m a sucker for a chemical exfoliant, and I always dreamed of the day that Youth To The People would launch one. After only a couple of uses, I can affirmatively say and see, clearly, that this is my new favourite acid in my routine.

As someone who’s used to acids, the toner didn’t tingle too much at first. On a scale of 0-10, 10 being a burn of a chemical peel, this tingle was a 4.5. I’m in love with the way it sweeps on my skin, smooth and not “glassy.” It actually leaves the skin very moisturized. YTTP claims that the skin will feel smoother and softer after one use… and well, guess what? My skin felt, looked and radiated smoother, softer and brighter after literally one use …And then I woke up in the morning, and was left speechless. My hyperpigmentation was lighter, and blemishes were diminished by 60% and by the next day, 80%.

For my routines using this toner in my testing period, I tried and still am using their recommended Power Facial which is for a night routine. Acids are powerful, and for me personally, work most effectively in the evening to allow proper penetration without much disruption during sleep. Always remember to wear SPF in the morning, especially after acids touch your face.

Youth To The People Power Facial

Prep: Cleanse skin with your usual nightly cleanser. Pat dry.

I use the Youth To The People Superfood Cleanser.

Exfoliate: Saturate a cotton round in Kombucha Power Toner and sweep over face and neck, avoiding the eye area. Do not rinse.

Activate: Mist face and neck generously with Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist for an added boost of hydration.

(Trust me, you’ll really love a cool down after exfoliating!)

Treat: Apply Superberry Dream Mask to the face and neck for ultimate brightening.

I like sweeping toners across my face and then patting them into the skin for optimal results.

Hydrate: Apply nightly moisturizer to lock in hydration.

Usually, I’d stop at the Superberry Dream Mask since it’s really thick and buttery, but I really wanted to follow their suggested use routine, so I applied the Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream on top of a thin layer of the dream mask, allowing about 30 seconds between each step.

Don’t have those YTTP products above? Don’t worry! Follow these steps as a guide to help prep and hydrate the skin pre and post-exfoliation.

I’m so glad I followed their suggested routine because my skin looks and feels it’s best at the moment. I’m mostly speechless to see how quickly the blemishes diminished and how my pores near my cheek area look less visible, allowing for a smooth canvas. My face is radiating. I truly look forward to seeing how my skin reacts to this toner moving forward because so far, I’m head over heels for it. Here we are with another star five product review from my favourite Western skincare brand, Youth To The People.

5 Ways To Use Fur Oil

This one’s for you, you and you.

desseydoll_Fur_2.JPG

In today’s sponsored post, I’ll be reviewing the deeply loved Fur Oil, a silky blend of oils mixed into one to help soothe, treat and soften pubic and body hair. It also clears pores for fewer ingrown and healthy, nourished skin. Really, anywhere.

As a fond lover of the line in general, I love and value Fur’s mission and beliefs to encompass inclusivity in the beauty industry and embrace all unique parts of our minds, bodies and souls, pubic hair included.

Today, we’re talking all things Fur Oil and my 5 favourite ways to use it. Keep an eye out for my full brand review to come!

MY TOP 5 FAVOURITE WAYS TO USE FUR OIL + EXPERIENCE

Review: Kylie Skin

Here we are, Foaming Face Wash, Vanilla Milk Toner and Face Moisturizer all in one place. Not only on my shelf, but happily on my face, too.

Kylie Skin_desseydoll_2.PNG

I had a feeling this would come to life one day. I’m here to review the products, not Kylie. My initial thoughts blossomed from my curiosity as to how someone with her accessibility to top chemists and labs, would use her resources to create a skincare line and formulate the products with great ingredients and innovative developments in the beauty industry at this time. As I’m not sure how innovative that went, I’m quite excited to be writing this review. As always, I’ll be breaking down the claims, ingredients / pH levels, personal experiences and overall thoughts. This may just be the most detailed review I’ve written to date.

In this first launch, Kylie came out with six products accompanied with makeup removing wipes and a travel bag. Launching an SPF in this first launch would’ve been key. Especially with Kylie’s influence, having an SPF first would’ve been a very smart move not only for business but for educational purposes, too. I recently watched her vlog where she mentioned that they’re currently working on creating one which is great news. An SPF isn’t always easy to develop as there are tons of regulations that need to pass with the FDA.

Kylie Skin_desseydoll_10.jpg

As she previewed the products before launching, the Foaming Face Wash, Vanilla Milk Toner and Face Moisturizer caught my eye right away. In regards to trying her other three products, I didn’t feel the need to purchase them. I was somewhat interested in trying her Vitamin C Serum, but couldn’t justify buying it since I have a few others waiting for me to try at home. The Walnut Face Scrub was something I was debating over, but didn’t purchase for two reasons: One, being that walnut shell powder is abrasive and two, that I didn’t need it. The Eye Cream was the product that had the least of my interest. I don’t think eye cream is all that necessary to begin with, and I already have a few on my shelf that need to be used up first.

Kylie Skin claims: Cruelty free, gluten free, vegan, paraben free, sulfate free, dermatologist tested.
Please note that having “dermatologist tested” slapped on a label doesn’t justify anything. The term is very up in the air as we don’t know the source or how to debunk it and inevitably, skincare should always be tested properly.

Suited for: All skin types. (I saw Kylie mentioned she’ll be working on different lines targeted towards different skin types in the future)

With no expectations, it’s time to experience Kylie…

Kylie Skin_desseydoll_9.jpg

Foaming Face Wash

What is it: A luxurious foaming face wash.

What it does: The Foaming Face Wash claims to gently cleanse the skin while helping retain moisture levels and improve elasticity. It also helps removes excess dirt, oils and makeup. It helps brighten the skin as well.

Key ingredients:

Glycerin as a humectant to help balance the moisture levels in the skin.

Kiwi Seed Oil as an antioxidant and rich source of Vitamin C & E which helps to hydrate, nourish and brighten the skin.

Sodium Hyaluronate (a derivative of Hyaluronic Acid) to help hydrate and plump the skin. Hyaluronic Acid is one of my favourite ingredients in skincare!

Notes:

Please note that just because active / key ingredients are listed as “key", doesn’t mean they are. The “key” ingredients in this cleanser including Kiwi Seed Oil and Sodium Hyaluronate are unfortunately at the bottom of the ingredient list which doesn’t make them main ingredients. This occurs in most of the products which you can simply discover by looking at the ingredient lists.

Water and Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate are the first two ingredients in the list. PCG is an amino-acid derived cleansing ingredient that softens the skin, derived from coco fatty acid. It’s mild and non-drying.

Formula pH level: 7.5 which is high for a cleanser. Normally, cleansers should have a pH balance of 5.5.

Texture and scent: The texture feels very luxurious as it gradually becomes more “creamy” when massaging it into your skin. This cleanser is lightly fragranced with fragrance being at the middle / bottom of the ingredient list. I’m not for fragrance in skincare but it’s less likely to irritate your skin in a wash off product rather than a cream or toner. It has citrus notes but in my experience, I stop noticing the scent after I start massaging the cleanser onto my skin.

How to use: Kylie Skin recommends to use this morning and evening. In my opinion, I’d use this as a second cleanse if you’re wearing makeup and a first cleanse if you aren’t.

View full recommended use details here.

My experience: I’m really not mad about it.

The first three times I used it, my skin was lightly tingling. Was it because of the citric acid? Was it because I applied products too quickly after? As I used it more and more, I really grew to like it. So now, I can say I really do enjoy this cleanser. It’s gentle and surprisingly does NOT leave my skin feeling stripped or dry after rinsing it. I personally don’t have issues with foaming cleansers stripping my skin, so I wasn’t too concerned about this one. It feels very luxurious at it lathers and foams in a very rich fashion on the skin the more I massage it in. Now, in regards to the fragrance, we could really do without it. It was too strong for me at first which almost made me stop using it completely. The more I used it, the less noticeable the fragrance was which is now okay for me. I’m generally not too sensitive to fragrance, and as much as it affected me at first, it’s not bothersome anymore. Honestly, the line smells light and gentle, baby-doll pink vibes. Weird, but it just does. (Caroline Hirons described the “baby” scent in such an accurate way!)

The cleanser is gentle enough to use morning and evening, although I wouldn’t recommend to use it to remove makeup. It’s ideal as a second cleanse after removing makeup with an oil based cleanser first, or as a first cleanse on a bare face to remove minimal products, light concealer or SPF.

My skin really enjoys this cleanser. I notice an instant balance in regards to my overall complexion despite the 7.5 pH level. It’s gentle and I only need to use one pump for my full face.

Vanilla Milk Toner

What is it: An alcohol-free toner.

What it does: The Vanilla Milk Toner claims to replenish the look and feel of the skin while helping rebalance its pH levels. It also helps to remove any excess dirt, oil and makeup. Kylie Skin claims it also helps unclog, purify and minimize the appearance of pores.

Key ingredients:

Apple Fruit Extract as an antioxidant to help improve the look of the skin.

Squalane as a skin-strengthening oil. With highly refined moisturizing properties derived from olives, squalane helps restore the skin’s moisture barrier. (Third listed ingredient — I’m obsessed with squalane!)

Avocado Oil & Apricot Kernel Oil as emollients to help soothe, soften and restore the skin’s hydration levels.

Other ingredients to note are Sweet Almond Oil, Banana Leaf Extract, Sucrose Cocoate, Jojoba Seed Oil and Sodium Hyaluronate.

Formula pH level: 5.5

Texture and scent: This toner feels like a light essence. It’s milky and lightweight. This toner is alcohol free and lightly fragranced with fragrance being at the middle / bottom of the ingredient list. The consistency and scent are VERY reminiscent of Too Cool For School’s Egg line, especially their Egg-sential Fluid Toner, which is my favourite skincare line I’ve ever tried. I noticed a lot of people were saying that the Vanilla Milk Toner has a very strong vanilla sent but I really don’t notice it. It’s light, gentle and the furthest thing from nauseating. It’s a very gentle “baby” scent, yet again.

How to use: Kylie Skin recommends to use this morning and evening.

View full recommended use details here.

My experience: Obsessed.

I absolutely love this toner. For me, it’s a toner and essence all at once. I say that because of the texture. I absolutely love how plump and dewy it leaves my skin. For the first few times I used it, I swiped it across my face with a cotton pad. It was a little slippery because of the milky consistency, so I decided to then tap and press it into my skin, and I love, love, love using it that way. It’s so nourishing and my skin drinks it up while allowing the following steps to absorb into the skin beautifully. Waking up in the morning after having using it the night before, my skin looks just as dewy and healthy as it did when I first applied it. I love the ingredients and I love squalane, so it’s no surprise I love this toner. My skin looks so balanced and healthy after using it. I have a little weakness for it because it reminds me of the Too Cool For School Egg line.

Face Moisturizer

What is it: A smoothing face moisturizer.

What it does: The Face Moisturizer claims to help hydrate the skin with a combination of humectants and emollients. The formula will condition the skin for a soft-to-the-touch formula without heaviness, greasiness or oiliness.

Key ingredients:

Shea Butter to provide moisture to the skin.

Banana Leaf Extract, Oat Bran Extract and Orange Peel Extract that help smooth and soften the skin.

Glycerin as a humectant to help balance the moisture levels in the skin.

Aloe to help soothe the skin and help decrease redness.

Texture and scent: This moisturizer claims to be fragrance free, although contains Orange Peel Extract… Not all fragrance is synthetic. There are natural fragrances that are irritants to the skin as well. The moisturizer doesn’t smell like anything, and if anything, it’s reminiscent to First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Cream or Oatmeal Mask. The formula does contain Oat Bran Extract which I love. It feels really lightweight and sinks into the skin immediately.

How to use: Kylie Skin recommends to use this morning and evening.

View full recommended use details here.

My experience: DEW ME.

This moisturizer is incredible. It’s super lightweight and great for morning and evening. It’s crazy how healthy and beautiful my skin looks after using it. I really love it, although I wouldn’t mind a LITTLE more nourishment (ingredient wise) but besides that, it’s great. It sits beautifully over the toner and under makeup, allows for a beautiful, fresh face canvas. Like Kylie describes it, it the formula conditions the skin for a soft-to-the touch finish, without any excess oil.

Kylie Skin_desseydoll_3.jpg

Overall thoughts:

  • The packaging is high quality and sturdy, soft to touch.

  • The pricing is reasonable.

  • The ingredients / formulations are repetitive.

  • Good: Kylie launched the essential steps to a good, basic skincare routine. (Minus SPF)

  • The wipes are useless. You should be double cleansing to properly take off your makeup.

  • Kylie Skin, in my opinion, is targeted towards an audience who isn’t as invested in skincare / skincare education but want a basic routine, or for a younger audience that are looking to get into skincare.

I really do enjoy all three products I’ve reviewed. I didn’t go into them with any expectations as I try not to when testing new products. I’m not disappointed in the slightest. Now, with that being said, I’m also not over the moon swooning for Kylie Skin, and that’s because it’s a very basic skincare line. But basic can also be good, and it’s good enough for me to say I enjoy the products I’ve tried. I look forward to seeing how the formulations and ingredients will mature with her future launches, and how the products will continue to grow on me. Suited for all skin types, I’d recommend the toner and moisturizer as my favourites, which I can see myself repurchasing as well. Yes, the cleanser is gentle, but the pH is pretty high. Between you and I, there are hundreds of products I’d recommend over Kylie Skin at this time, but right now, I’m content with my purchases and results so far.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.
